"The Lookout Fire has been growing rapidly due to the dry, windy conditions in Lane County," Oregon State Fire Marshal Mariana Ruiz-Temple said. The Lane County Sheriff’s Office has level 1 and level 2 evacuation notices in place for homes near the fire. Sunday afternoon the fire was pushed by extreme temperatures and gusty winds. The move allows the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) to mobilize firefighters and equipment and the Blue Incident Management Team to protect life and property. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act for the Lookout Fire burning in the Cascade foothills of Lane County. The Cowlitz County Coroners Office responded and took custody of the decedent. His family was notified with the assistance of the Cowlitz Chaplaincy. The male was identified as Xander Medina, age 15 of Longview. Within minutes, the dive team recovered the decedent. Two divers entered the water and began their search. The Cowlitz County Sheriffs office deployed a boat as did the Cowlitz County Dive Team. The bystander was able to assist one male back to shore. A bystander observed the two males struggling and jumped into the water to assist. Two of the swimmers were struggling to swim back to shore. Once the three friends made it about halfway across, they discovered how strong the current was and attempted to turn around to swim back to shore. Three youths were attempting to swim across the river. 6:15 PM Cowlitz County deputies along with Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue and the Cowlitz County Dive Team were dispatched to the report of a 15-yoa male, struggling to swim in the Cowlitz River in the Lexington area.
